PRESS RELEASE RACE DAY 3

Langkawi, 11 January 2018 – Day 3. Great news this morning, the PRO, Simon James, decided the weather conditions are good enough for the ’round the island’ race. This race did not happen last year due to unfavourable wind conditions, so therefore it is all the more exciting that the race runs again this year.

The Racing Class had a clear start at 9.35am on course 22. Multihulls started at 9.40am on course 21 with only 3 boats, as Lady Alla retired from the Regatta. The third group of IRC1, IRC2, Club Class and Ocean Rover Class started soon after the Multihulls also racing course 21.

The wind was not as strong as predicted earlier, and at about 12.45 it started to drop and rain clouds closed in. Because there was literally no wind south of Pulau Dayang Bunting, the PRO decided to shorten the races for all classes finishing at Gate 2 except for the racing class which did the full course 22.

Salleh Ahmad’s Uranus took top honours today in the racing class winning on corrected time by a mere 23 seconds ahead of THA72, Zuhal and Alive, the only class who finished the full course.

Defending Champion Vincent Chan’s Mata Hari led the IRC1 class ahead of newcomer Char Chan skippered by Kazuki Kihara.

The winner of the IRC2 class is Phoenix, skippered by Niels Degenkolw, who has won all races in his class this year so far.

Gerhard Pils’ Fetz Ma came first in the Multihull class today, followed by Tantrum Too and Allegro.

The Club Class winner was Fortissimo X, skippered by Yasuto Fuda, second came Sophia skippered by Philip Auger, who retired yesterday and third came Stas Pechekin’s Southern Breeze 3.

The winner in the Ocean Rover class was Chantique, with Linda second and Indulgence third.

Sailors then enjoyed a ‘mid race prize presentation and cocktail party’ at Charlie’s Bar and Grill at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, followed by lucky draw.

The Royal Langkawi 16th International Regatta is approved by the World Sailing (formerly known as ISAF) and Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA).
